Total Knee Replacement

Total Knee Replacement

Total Knee Replacement (TKR) surgery is usually the result of severe arthritis, which causes limited range of motion, knee pain, and difficulty walking. Physical therapy is a major part of the post-operative protocol for TKR. Your doctor and physical therapist will work hand in hand to develop a care plan that gets you back on your feet as quickly and painlessly as possible.

The average amount of time spent in the rehabilitate stage after a TKR a surgery is 6-8 weeks. During this time, your therapist will utilize different machines as well as many exercises to improve your mobility and independence since it is important to master the functional mobility in order to be discharged home. The exercise your therapist will teach you will help build strength so that you are able to do the things you want and need to do in your own home such as walking up a flight of stairs. Many patients are able to walk completely unassisted after week 6 of rehabilitation!

Everyone is different and progression after a surgery will be too. Halcyon Rehabilitation Outpatient has a team of therapists dedicated to your progress; we will work directly with your doctor to tailor a care plan and home program that meets your individual needs.
