Energy Conservation Tips

As we age many of us desire to remain as independent as possible. Fatigue along with aging and/or a disability can hinder us from functioning independently. Energy conservation techniques can help reduce the amount of effort to perform certain tasks, eliminating tasks, and adding more opportunities for the rest of the day. Below are some tips that may help you!

Rearrange Your Environment:
Keep frequently used items in accessible places.
Replace heavy items with lighter ones; for example, use plastic plates and paper cups.
Install longer handles on faucets and doorknobs
Adjust workspace for better posture; bad posture can reduce energy.
Install pull-out or swing out shelves.
Wear an apron with pockets to carry around items.
Move your bed to the main floor if possible and eliminate stairs when able.

Eliminate Unnecessary Effort:
Sit rather than stand when possible; preparing meals, washing dishes, etc.
Use adaptive equipment such as a reacher, shower chair, a hands-free headset for the phone, etc.
Let dishes air dry.
Use already prepared foods.
Use a rolling cart to transport items around the house.
Use grocery store delivery services if able.
Use wheelchairs or scooter when out shopping.

Plan Ahead:
Gather all supplies needed for a task before beginning.
Call stores before you go out to make sure what you need is available.
Cook larger quantities at once to store and freeze for later.
